Soil Amendments

Posted at March 8, 2012 | By : | Categories : Soils & Mulches | 0 Comment

When planting a tree or a shrub, the soil should be amended to its proper specifications.

In most cases, natural Cape Cod soils are often much too sandy for cultured plants to grow well in. Sometimes, however, they contain too much clay. Either way, the Cape Cod soil needs to be amended to either break up the clay, to enrich the soil or to balance the PH.

Crocker Nurseries carries all of the soil amendments you will need to have success in your garden.

In bulk form, we offer loam. Loam is a well drained, yet moisture retentive base for your garden. It is particularly recommended for large areas that currently contain poor soil. Bulk loam is purchased by the yard, or for small amounts, by the 20 or 30 gallon container size. For small quantities, you must bring in your container to be filled. Rotted horse manure is also available in bulk. When mixed with loam and soil, manure will offer an improved tilth to the soil, moisture retentiveness and nutrients. Delivery is also available for loam and manure purchases.

The most popular and beneficial bagged product for planting is one called Fafard Complete Mix. Complete Mix is a balanced mixture of top soil, garden manure and peat moss. We highly recommend this for the planting of trees, shrubs and roses and almost any other plant that requires a good, moisture-retentive soil.

Other products available at Crocker Nurseries include:Sphagnum Peat Moss (available in several size bales), Top Soil, Garden Manure and Shrimp and Seaweed Compost

Powdered lime, pelletized lime, aluminum sulfate and other products will raise or lower the PH in your soil. Talk with a Crocker Nurseries representative to select which product is right for the plants you are gardening with. Houseplants and containers also need proper soil conditions. Crocker Nurseries offers a selection of potting mixes specifically designed for container use. We also offer specialty soils for the more demanding houseplants, such as African Violet Soil, Orchid Mix and Desert Sand.
