Our Favorite Annuals
Now is the time to start planting annuals in the garden and in containers and window boxes. See what plants we recommend!
Adding annual plantings to your existing beds provides lasting color for the whole summer. Also, window boxes and patio planters filled with annuals gives a colorful addition to the look of your house.
As decisions start to be made about what plants to pick out this May, we’d like to help you out with some of our best performers and favorite annual varieties.
Euphorbia ‘Hip Hop’: This aggressive bloomer is very easy to care for. It likes part to full sun (late afternoon sun would be fine) and grows 12-14” high. It looks great in mixed planters because of its delicate white flower (see the picture to the right). It can also be brought in and used as a houseplant when it gets cold outside.
Calibrachoa Callieâ: Small petunia-like flowers cover this plant and provide a mass of color. It is heat tolerant, will take full sun and has a trailing growth habit. It branches well and stays tight so it doesn’t get leggy. This makes it work well for hanging baskets, window boxes and containers. Available in several colors: Deep Yellow, Dark Blue and White/Rose.
Lantana ‘Confetti’: This tricolor flower mixing yellow, orange and pink is very attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. It is also very heat tolerant and will do well in full sun (pictured at the left).
Whisper Petunias: These petunias are ideal for a wide range of use. They have a controlled, well-branched growth habit with medium sized flowers. They work well in combination hangers and containers and will also do well in ground beds. They have very good heat tolerance and do best in full sun.
Osteospermum: Great for the cooler spring weather, these plants do well in full sun and will continue to bloom until the heat of summer. They do require cooler nights to produce flower buds, so when it gets really warm they may stop or slow flowering. They will start blooming again late summer and into the fall. They have a very interesting flower, either white, yellow or purple petals with a purple center.
In addition to these we have a huge variety of annuals including our own geraniums we’ve been growing since March and even some tropical and exotic plants. We also carry all the supplies you will need to plant your annuals including a few different potting soils, and our favorite fertilizer for annuals, Schultz Bloom Plusâ.
Our staff can help you choose the right annuals for your gardens, give tips on container gardening and we will even plant your window boxes and containers for you.
